The intent is to garner sympathy for "scientific freedom" or some other crackpot rationalization for "give me public money and let me do whatever the fuck I want in the lab, including personal profit from your tax dollars, and including things that put other people at physical risk".

Sure, the George Church's of the world are probably pissed at him, and a little envious at all the attention he's getting, but they nevertheless will underhandedly (or sometimes even overtly) defend him ... not out of sympathy but out of self-interest.

Such are the ethics of this class of biotech doods trying to push the edge. I know some of them personally and I so attest.
