On The Missing and what we choose to ignore

quote [ If we can play AAA titles while ignoring their bad politics, we should make the effort to experience indies that tell human stories while ignoring their clunkiness ]

A nice call for quirky games in the light of big bland ones. Plus, they're cheaper!

TBH, I don't really agree with this article. There are plenty of indie games which are just as amazing as AAA games; there's no need to compromise just because you are playing indie. Its almost insulting to suggest otherwise at this point as indies have been punching up for years now.

Games like Hollow Knight, Celeste, Hyper Light Drifter, Dead Cells, Undertale, etc. are all exceptionally polished experiences which are legit GotY contenders in their own rights.

Meanwhile, Swery has always been a quirky developer whose ideas are more compelling then the games they get placed in. I personally enjoyed Deadly Premonition, but that game was janky garbage mechanically speaking. It's not surprising that his newest game has some brilliant and clumsy aspects mixed together. But he is not representative of indie devs as a whole.

You're right. That's sadly true for a lot of alternative media trying a little too hard.

And I totally agree with the polished experience thing as well. You could even argue that a work with a smaller than AAA scope allows for greater artistic coherence.

on another game related note, techdirt is hosting a public domain game jam to celebrate the first time things have aged in to public domain in 21 years.
