The thing with USC 2257 is, if there's a photo with graphic nudity, the site needs a compliance thing which SE isn't really up to. The main commercial porn sites do. Pictures that aren't photos don't fall under this, which is why the NSFW corner art is ok here. Or you can make thumbs with all the fun bits cropped out or covered up.

Technically cropping and censoring is a no, no too. If the person photographed/videoed is in a sexual situation then i'm supposed to have documentation on that person.

Maybe the safest option would be to just disable thumbs on porn/NSFW posts altogether?

I mean, yeah, ideally we'd all just take care to choose appropriate thumbs, but in the real world people make mistakes and porn posts are rare enough these days that we're kind of out of the habit of thinking about 2257 compliance. Getting rid of porn thumbs would save you some stress, and I'd hate to see someone get banned just because they forgot the site was hosted in a backwards-ass puritanical country.
