How Writers Map Their Imaginary Worlds

quote [ One of life’s great treats, for a lover of books (especially fantasy books), is to open a cover to find a map secreted inside and filled with the details of a land about to be discovered. ]

I've spent hours pouring over maps from The Lord of the Rings and the DragonLance books. Part of it was my A/D&D background (which eventually led to me creating my own, large-scale maps), and part of it was something else I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe I always wanted to be a cartographer. Who knows? Not I.
