Sunspot Solar Observatory Shutdown Mystery

quote [ We're learning the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, NM, will stay shut down indefinitely. The facility was evacuated more than a week ago because of a security concern, but investigators are not saying what that concern is. The FBI told KOAT the security concern is not about aliens or UFO's, but the entrance was blocked off by yellow crime tape. "We were told we had a credible threat through the FBI and to leave," said evacuee Sean Williams. He and his family were one of five households told to leave the area. He said they weren't given a reason why. ]

First the DOE opens a gateway to the Upside Down, and now this!

The Observatory is adamant that there was no mercury spill:
The National Solar Observatory in Sunspot has been closed since last Thursday, along with the nearby post office and roughly a dozen residents, but officials remain tight-lipped as to what’s going on.

The secrecy persists even as local media report the FBI has showed up to the site, and Blackhawk helicopters have been seen circling overhead.

There's been little insight as to what the 'security issue' may be, but now, we know two things it definitely is not – aliens or toxic mercury.

‘There’s no mercury incident,’ Sunspot Solar Observatory Director R.T. James McAteer told the Alamogordo Daily News this week.

‘That’s a completely different set of protocols that would not have involved them locking all the doors.

‘We have a very regular maintenance routine. There is no cause for concern there.’

The Observatory has issued a completely unominous statement on its website:
"With the excitement this closure has generated, we hope you will come and visit us when we do reopen, and see for yourself the services we provide for science and public outreach in heliophysics."

This has been news to me since no word why this was done has never been brought up locally because most people who work in that area live in my town of El Paso.

If you have to say, "It's not aliens," it's aliens.

Well he'll be making the announcement September 20th at 2:18pm.

Its a solar observatory. Unless aliens are coming from the sun I fail to see why this is a thing. But knowing Trump he's probably going to preempt an attack on the sun with our space force.

The next nearest significant power source is 25 trillion miles away, so if the aliens are in the neighborhood and need to top up their tanks, I'm thinking Sol is the place to stop.

It's New Mexico. If someone's in the can for more than five minutes they need to clarify that it's not aliens.

Don't tell anyone, but I heard it was alien terrorists.

Nah. It was Terrorist Aliens.

Whichever, we can't cave into their demands about Space Judea.

Best explanation I've heard so far is that Chinese spies were using it as a staging point to monitor signals coming from White Sands.

The mystery has been solved. There was a fugitive in the area and the remoteness of the observatory placed the staff at danger. The observatory is reopening

It opened today.

Yeah, that doesn't have the ring of truth. When was the last time the FBI tossed you out of your house or business because their might be a fugitive around? A quick search ( which clearly could have missed things) doesn't give any indication that the feds would have jurisdiction. Even if they did, posting a guard or two makes more sense than shutting down the facility.

The statement does not name the FBI
