There is this one passage in “On The Road” where Burroughs bemoans the passing of bars with old men on wooden chairs being replaced with glitzy chrome diners (this was in the 1940s). Thought of that when I read about a tourist guide to the forgotten culinary art of US diners recently in a travelling essay.
Somehow, there‘s always something less artificial to be missed. |
