Ankle Monitors Aren’t Humane. They’re Another Kind of Jail

quote [ Electronic monitors violate people’s civil rights and carry unfair financial penalties. ]

I hate America's fixation on punishing people.

Counterpoint:. An anklet that detects alcohol probably saved a family member's life. He was able to work instead of sitting in jail and forced sobriety on him for six months.

Of course they're another kind of jail. They're supposed to be.

I thought they provided a bit of granularity. You fucked up, you need to be overseen so you're not so much a danger to yourself and others.

But on proper review of the article I can see why how that goes out the window when you just don't give a fuck about rehabilitation. Another cheapass product, where the costs lay on the individual not the state. The incentives are all kinds of fucked, monetizing yoyo incarceration while payday lending freedom out to the prisoner.

Anybody in the county jail would give their last dime to put one on and walk out the door....rehabilitation...Hahahah..you have never been to jail have you?

Don't have to go to jail to know it's better to be able to retain a semblance of your old life through the penal systems version of an outpatient program.

I would have to had read the article to see how it's implementation needs a lot of work. How it's critics are not against monitors wholesale but how it seems to be slapdash. Slapdash, and considering the incentives of the state and company that supplies the devices, has little hope of being fixed.

You seem like someone with on the ground experience. A real advocate for someone who had to navigate the penal system. I'm sure you'd agree with me that it's a system with potential that could use overhauling. I would go into it, but i would just be repeating what was in the article to begin with. So why bother repeating what we all have already read.

Yea been in an a few lock ups...there is a lot wrong with the system and the jails themselves...electronic monitoring is not one of them.

The only thing jail does to rehabilitate inmates is to teach them they never want to go back.

In my field, punishment is effective by definition. If it doesn't decrease the probability of the behavior in the future, to a socially significant extent, it isn't actually punishment.

Our justice system doles out little punishment. Its just dishing out vindictiveness.

And in what universe or country on this earth do they not punish those that screw up? Get a DUI and they pat you on the ass and tell you to do better next time? In Thailand or Japan you are looking at SERIOUS jail time.

An ankle bracelet enables the person to at least be home and not sitting in the county jail on the taxpayer dime.
