I'm reading Sapiens by Harari. It's very good. Maybe we should revive the SE Book Club? Might work better with nonfic?

I once took a Native American history class from a Tuscarora guy named Andrew Jackson. The irony was not lost on him. He used to say, "We call it 'His Story'."
The stele of ancient kings ALWAYS show them winning. To read ancient Egyptian tellings, they never lost a battle, even the Pharaohs whose bodies showed terrible wounds and decay associated with a "battlefield mummification' . News has never really been about the "objective" relation of facts. Never. There has always been an axe to grind and the outlet has always considered its audience when choosing what to write and about what. And history...written by the winners. FFS, prior to about 1900, there were papers in the US that were the official organs of political parties, out loud and proud of it, THAT is why people bought that paper.... This should not be a surprise. Humans want to hear what they want to hear. They will reward those who give it to them and punish those who don't. |
