The Bullshit Web

quote [ An honest web is one in which the overwhelming majority of the code and assets downloaded to a user’s computer are used in a page’s visual presentation, with nearly all the remainder used to define the semantic structure and associated metadata on the page. ]

Another grumpy state-of-web opinion, alas pretty relatable.

I do feel like an old crank with this and so many other articles about the miserable state of the web, but it does also feel important to keep restating the way we wish the web worked. Maybe eventually, with enough popular sentiment, it will change.

I think there's definitely merit beyond "the good old days" to this sort of argument and goal. The power of the web is pretty thoroughly dwarfed by the pretty empty entertainment/commerce hub it has become.

It's easy to point the finger at social media in particular as addicting but unfulfilling. But really, finding something worth sticking around for, or actually engaging with, is much more challenging. Have a web for the people, by the people, is still a better experience (at least for me). The argument that this essay starts to make, is that it doesn't just mean lots of junk coded into a site, but constantly making a quick buck off of junk content and ideas.

It's true. Acceptable average page size and thus download time seems to be increasing. (Meanwhile the shithead ISPs keep bandwidth down instead of innovating).

With news sites, good luck. I however, cannot stand certain major news sites due to their bad practices and do not visit them.

I like how the guy is ranting comfortably from his ultra minimal layout with no images blog. haha.
