The history behind the way Americans use forks

quote [ Using a round-ended knife and not having a fork, one would either have made considerable use of the fingers conveying solid foods to the mouth or made do with the spoon. This raises and interesting, if not conjectural, point. Americans often comment that Europeans use their forks “upside down.” ]

Intercontinental dining manners.

I hold both countries responsible. I think that the United States has been foolish. I think we've all been foolish. ... And I think we're all to blame.

Having the tines pointing up makes it far easier to stab up and into the throat, the ribcage, and the eye socket as opposed to turned down tines which are only suitable for stabbing into the hand, thigh or groin which are only cause debilitating but not lethal wounds.

Also, tines up means that the food is less likely to fall off the end when you try to lift it from the plate.

My father was born in the West Indies and he taught me how to use a fork and knife. When I got older and ate with friends they would always make fun of me or accuse me of having horrible table manners because of how I used my utensils. It wasn’t until maybe 10 years ago that I learned I’ve been eating the “European way”.
