Art technicians: The industry's dirty secret, or all part of the process?

quote [ All the work and none of the glory? Or just another job? Art technicians, and the artists who rely on them, open up about what goes on behind-the-scenes in the studio ]

My neighborhood is essentially a gentrified junkyard, but there's 1 residence that predates it - an couple of metal sculptors/artists studio-warehouse behind tall barbed-wire fences. I know they've been involved with setting up long-term art installations downtown, and not always their work.

I mean, I can understand having an idea but not the know-how to get around engineering limitations, especially on bigger, heavier metal stuff. But this line got me: "I used to make all my drawings myself but it's extremely labour-intensive and now I work with a team of people to make them."

As someone who went to art school - fuck you lady.

I feel the same about people who call themselves musicians with limited musical understanding but a big smile and producer with experienced studio friends. Song Exploder breaks down music production: weepy kid takes credit for other's work upon their vague and boring idea

I don't even mind "limited musical understanding" -- some of my favorite artists barely knew what they were doing -- but if you want to call yourself a musician the least you could do is make some damn music.
