This makes me think of Robert Pirsig's card system that he discusses extensively in his book, Lila: An Inquiry into Morals. For those who don't recognize the author or the book, he's the guy that wrote Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Both are freaking awesome books, if you happen to be temperamentally open to his ideas.
