I’m an environmental journalist, but I never write about overpopulation.

quote [ Since you asked (many times).
[…]
Shifting wealth within populations — reducing the number of very wealthy and the number in poverty — can have as much carbon impact as reducing overall population. ]

Hmm … boils down to some humbleness and human rights, right?

I'm a demographer, and I never write about overpopulation, either. It's too tied to racist ideologies and xenophobia, and is only one facet of the resource problem. Focusing on population size and fertility puts the burden of correction on the impoverished countries of the world, and not the countries that are consuming and discarding the majority of resources.

Not sure this should be under Politics, although I understand why you'd choose that category. I usually have Politics filtered out, but I'm glad I clicked the collapsed entry, anyway.

Ah, sorry! Too late to change now. Didn't even know that was possible, cool.

Great article. Thanks for the post.

I like, also, the interview with Paul Hawken referenced in the posted article. And there, too, I have some stories, having met the man a couple times and knowing folks who worked for him. Simply, brilliance can sometimes breed arrogance and misbehavior. That said, I'd take Hawken's word over a lot of folks.

One person who matches Hawken for brilliance is Lynn Twist. She takes the same approach about supporting women, because the community always does better when you do that. SO glad I met her 20 years ago, because it led to me doing as much as I can in that area.
