Rainy Mood

quote [ \\\\\ ]

OK, I mentioned my fondness for rain videos in JWWargo's Napflix post and was asked to provide links, so here's a list.

The main link isn't bad but I prefer on-location videos - I look for actual field recordings (not loops off some sound effects CD), in stereo if possible, and I prefer percussive sounds as I find them more relaxing. YMMV. I also like to see the rain.

JWWargo's post:

One of the first I found was this one, under an umbrella:

This was shot in Norway and for some reason I find both sound and picture very soothing (probably means I'm a white supremacist death metal fan at heart):

I love driving in the rain, and so does this guy, who has a bunch of these:
Carport rather than car:
In a tent:

His YouTube channel is here:

Under a poncho, good spatialization:

Rain on a tarp:

Rain on car roof:

My current favorite, rain on a campervan roof (also in Norway, hmm...):

Watch out for the ads, when I find one I like I often use a site like to download the video and save it.

I have a bit of ASMR:

...which I think is part of the reason why I like percussive stereo rain. If you respond to it ASMR videos can be great for falling asleep. You can search YouTube for "ASMR" to find more conventional examples (most of them involve young women pretending to brush the viewer's hair or give them a massage while speaking in a soft voice - and many of them seem to be blonde, look, there I go again.)

Here's an ASMR video with rain on an umbrella:

Here's one with talking and rain sounds (but they may be fake):

I also use apps sometimes to help me sleep. Some of my favorites are:
iSleep Easy and
Rain Rain (this one's very customizable)

These are on iPhone but I think are on Android as well.

That particular rain video always bugged me - you can hear cars go by on a highway. :(

That being said, this was my favorite sleeping video this past winter: Crackling Fireplace with Thunder, Rain and Howling Wind Sounds (HD)

Thanks. Very. Much.

I've been using four of five that I found on youtube, some of which are sea waves smashing against rocks or a beach. I have them all on my iphone which I play to a bluetooth speaker or my bose, but what bugs me about some of the rain vids is that it's more thunder than rain. I have to turn it up loud to hear the rain, and then all I get is booming thunder which does nothing as a sleep aid. It just disrupts whatever tranquillity I achieve.

I also like the idea of a timer, as some are 8 hours long. I slide the scale to the mid point or so. . . Also. There is a whole section on youtube that's "live," with no time limit - which I take to be looping something for 24hrs.

And the apps are cycles of a very short period. I agree, it has to be a live recording. This whole rain thing as a sleep aid is relatively new to me.

Also, you might consider moving to Norway. Maybe you can do some kind of exchange program for the next 3 years. If you know what I mean.

Here's a nice little episode on the whole ASMR thing … err, in French, sorry:

ASMR works best with headphones (for rain videos I generally prefer speakers, as headphones kinda kill the feeling that it's actually raining).

This one doesn't have rain, but one of my favorite ASMR videos for going to sleep is this one:

😴 ASMR For Guiding You To Sleep & Calming Your Anxiety 💤

...and so far ASMRrequests is my favorite creator, her channel is here:

I think somebody posted something similar to SE Classic ™, suggesting having three browser windows open. One playing the rain, one playing a crackling fire, and one playing Moonlight Sonata. I was long-term sleeping in my car at the time, so it was slightly out of my range.

That's what first got me into rain sounds

Can't enjoy a stormy night without Deb.

I wonder why we find the sound of rain soothing - at least when we're not out in it. Is it because predators or hostile tribes are less likely to hunt us when it's rainy?
