‘King of Kong’ Star Stripped of High Scores, Banned From Competition

quote [ Famed high-score gamer Billy Mitchell, best known for his leading role in “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” documentary, was officially stripped of his “Donkey Kong” and other video game high scores and banned from submitting scores to the world’s largest tracker of video game world records following a decision that he cheated, Twin Galaxies announced today. ]

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He played on a Mame cabinet instead of an original Donkey Kong cabinet. A correct disqualification, but still a bit of a technicality.

This happened because another record holder was also stripped of their records for playing on MAME before they looked closely on Billy.

It was cheating because he made it look like he was playing on a real arcade cabinet when he submitted his VHS recording of himself playing.

Further proving it’s not the cheating that ruins everything, but the cover up. Sounds familiar, but I’m having trouble placing a similar situation...

Oh, I misspoke. So it was Todd Rogers that got his records removed as well for Dragster (Atari). The former referee of Twin Galaxies, Mruczek, holds multiple records in MAME arcades.

You're not disqualified if you play on MAME arcade and they have specific categories for those. The issue was the cover up.

He was the first to get a perfect score on Pac Man and Twin Galaxies took him off that list, too. I don't know why. He did that one in front of a crowd of people.

He was stripped of all records and is no longer allowed to submit scores for new records.

He's not the record holder. He's a very naughty boy.

I'm curious to see the transition screens they mention but not curious enough to look it up myself.

How a screen would load on original box:

How screen loaded on Billy’s submitted footage:

What to look for is the bonus box (upper right) and oil drum (lower left). On original, bonus box loaded before drum. In Mr. Mitchell’s case it loaded after. The ‘after’ matches what emulators do apparently.
