Unveiling Project North Star

quote [ The coming of virtual reality has signaled a great moment in the history of our civilization. We have found in ourselves the ability to break down the very substrate of reality and create ones anew, entirely of our own design and of our own imaginations. ]

Leap Motion Reveals North Star, an Open-source AR Headset Prototype With Impressive Specs - another article with some more info.

This shit looks like something an owl themed superhero/villain would wear. :D

LeapMotion is the real deal though. I've got their earlier hand tracking unit and used it with an HTC vive about a year ago in such a way that it caused me to disassociate from my hands for about 20 minutes after. Pretty sweet.

The Era of Fake Video Begins
The digital manipulation of video may make the current era of “fake news” seem quaint.

A think piece about VR, AI, etc, and the currently-happening destruction of our social agreement about what is real; basically that stuff that steele is always nattering on about.

I've found my way into a facebook group filled with industry folks. They've got some serious blinders on. And most of them are not truly appreciative of how VR works by subverting the senses. To many of them, it's just another kind of video game. Motherfuckers are gonna break somebody... Probably many somebodies.

I said that same quote when talking to a dev who kinda gets it. ;)

Yeah, I have enough trouble with hangover effects from regular games.

The only games I know of that use Leapmotion were literally gay
steele said @ 8:19pm GMT on 9th Apr
I mean, grabbing virtual girl boobies is only gay if you're a girl. Though I'm sure there is virtual penis stuff, I just haven't seen it.

I've seen a couple pretty creepy Japanese vr implementations that were suppose to teach men how to act on dates. Experiences included hand tracking, eye tracking, and scent...
steele said @ 11:21am GMT on 10th Apr
I haven't seen that yet either! But I've expected it and would even encourage it if they taught respectful and helpful behaviors. Do you have links? One of my projects that's sitting in the back of my head is a storytelling trainer and I've often thought how I could probably turn it into something that would help people be more social.

Mostly, I've just seen the waifu trainer and personal fucktoy type stuff. Which while impressive, is probably going to make people more socially awkward.

I don't. I saw it at svvr last year and don't think we caught video of it. The first one was just that you were sitting across a table and were supposed to be on a date. the date only advanced if you made appropriate social queues, i.e. looking in certain areas, holding eye contact, or just saying the right thing. They had smells piped in at certain points like flowers from the table, her perfume.

I can see it being useful to teach proper etiquette for those that are challenged, but there was something creepy about it.

That demo used this. In case you weren't aware, you can use the built in mics on vive and rift to require speach cues in games/experiences. , Only a couple people have done it that i'm aware of.Like you have to talk to a person and say certain things for it to advance or can use voice command, etc. I have a couple great ideas for that i'm working on, but its a neat implementation thats not used much right now.

As a side note, i just got lined up to attend vrla so i'll be there. If you have anything you want me to grab pics/video of, let me know. I know a buddy and i will be live streaming at some point.

Is there a link missing? Are you talking about Unity's phrase recognition? I was aware of it, but hadn't tried it yet because it used win10's api. I've been developing gearvr only so far. I did do that Google speech recognition api for unity a while back though for exactly that intention. They also have a watson voice recognition ai as well. I think as the neural networks get more advanced and streamlined we're going to see more realistic interactions with NPCs through doing and speaking, rather than clicking. that's been my plans at least.

Sweet. I'll have to check their lineup and will let you know. Thanks for the heads up. I got my hands on a dell sff motherboard with an i7 3770 today. So I've spent all afternoon fucking with it in order to use it my atx case. Everything seems to be up and running, but now I'm trying to trouble shoot some error that happened with the WMR portal. Can't get the damn thing to load anymore. Not related to the board either, started a couple weeks ago. :( Worst case scenario I think I may have to wait for the spring windows 10 update to reload the whole thing.

I think they were doing directly through the oculus sdk, although i could be mistaken. I'll try to search for some more info. If nothing else, i'll see the dev (not the japanase demo dev) in may and i'll ask then.
