I've driven five of the routes listed:
Arizona 160 California 139 Delaware 18 Oregon 395 Utah 50 Trust me, these are some lonely roads. Now I have 45 more roads to put on my bucket list. p.s. I find it interesting that three of the five I have driven are on the top ten for scenic value according to the linked webpage - I feel pretty lucky. |

I remember driving route 50 though Nevada and Utah. l'm pretty sure I passed a broken down station wagon from the 60s with a family of skeletons inside.

Excellent read. When we had a restaurant some years back, I made sure to hang up every calendar that was offered.

One of my favorite books. I also like "PrairyErth" by the same author, but it is almost the opposite approach - a deep dive into a single rural county.

Ohhh, I love this sort of travel writing. I'll be loading that into the book bag right away. Thanks for the tip!

He's a very good writer with a real knack for evocative but efficient description. Hope you enjoy it!

Shit - you can do that just about ANYWHERE in the Anza-Borrego, or Imperial County back country. There are still burnt out trailer husks from 20 years ago in the desert where crazed bikers blew themselves up because they fucked up their peanut-butter-crank recipe.
