Uber’s self-driving trucks have started hauling freight

quote [ Uber's fleet of self-driving trucks has begun hauling commercial loads, the company announced on Tuesday. The trucks will operate first in Arizona, a state with famously permissive laws for self-driving technology.

And Uber is planning to organize its trucking network differently than a lot of conventional trucking companies. Instead of having a single driver hauling a load from start to finish, Uber plans to have human drivers handle relatively short legs at the beginning and end of the journey, while driverless trucks handle the long-haul route in between. ]

This isn't decades away, it's years or months.

WeiYang, apologies, I meant to continue our convo in the other thread and lost track of things. But what I wanted to say was I think you may be underestimating how quickly Computer Vision systems have advanced these past few years. I'm not saying we're anywhere close to the point where I'll be able to get a driverless van to take me from one National Forest campsite to another without intervention, but we're not far from seeing driverless vehicles taking up the job of taxis in urban areas simply because those areas will be data rich and constantly updated. You don't need sensors in the road if you've got a well trained network and plenty of cars running over the same paths day after day sending up to the minute data back to the cloud.

I guess it's possible that you are right. I will believe it when I see it, and frankly I am doubtful, but I am also not the leading expert, and have, on rare occasions, been wrong before.

We'll find out.

The technology is so advanced that even a human behind the wheel can't stop them from killing people.
