Four years ago I was married, trying to have a kid, living in the suburbs, successfully self employed. Now I'm single, have let go of the idea of having a family beyond my sisters and their kids, living in a previously foreclosed and abandoned wreck of a house in the country, and employed (for the first time in in my adult life) by a company that primarily does government contracting. Crazy how fast life can change. Four years from now, who freakin' knows?

By four years the Muskies should have us all in the gig mines manually doing cryptocurrency calculations. #GreenCoin

As a matter of fact, I'm coming up on my 100 day streak for Khan Academy! :D Been slamming that Algebra 1 lately; About 46% mastered in 3 months. I'm hoping to be ready for PreCalc by christmas time. I really regret not taking Calculus when I was younger as I'm finding the advanced math skills necessary for some of the projects I'm looking to code. While you lazy chumps are down there on the bottom level of the mines, I'm gonna be on the second to bottom level being slightly less abused. All because of my choices. ;)

Calculus is rad.

It's one of those things that I think people don't realize how many questions you can answer with it, both in a practical (how much of this thing have we used over time?) and in a philosophical how-does-the-universe-work sort of way.

No, trig is rad.

Math is the bum leg of my education. Completed Algebra 1 while homeschooled, don't remember any of it. Took Trigonometry in college and enjoyed, even passed with a B, but never found a use for it and lost that, too. I really wish I understood it better, I'm a big fan of cosmology and theoretical physics and can't go very far in either once math enters the picture.

I minored in math and haven't used anything above arithmetic since I graduated.

A2+B2=C2 is the math I've got the most use of over the years.

I've found basic algebra tremendously useful for my entire adult life, whether it's in CG animation and all the numbers and geometry and scripting that go with it, or in making stuff with my hands, with all the dimensions of lots of parts that all have to fit together.

A few years ago I took the time to track down my algebra teacher so I could thank him. While I was at it, I did the same for my favorite biology teacher, english lit teacher, and art teacher. Saints, every one of them.

You were lucky. I never learned anything from any of my teachers.
midden said @ 2:40pm GMT on 22nd Feb
That's awfully sad. I've been very fortunate to have had at least one really good teacher nearly every year from kindergarten through college, and often several at once. It's a big part of why I teach myself. Not full time, but one or two classes a year, usually. It's shameful how poorly such important people are compensated for their work.

I count with my fingers (I may have six fingers on my left hand, not entirely sure though).

Wow. Time flies.
