[aside] The hiss as you briefly dip your inoculation loop into the edge of the agar in a petri dish, after flaming to sterilise it before transferring microbes, is one of the most satisfying in the World.

I heard an interesting story on the news recently about how major chicken producers are phasing out the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter. It turns out recent studies have demonstrated it doesn't work on modern mass production chicken breeds.
