Zubrin's 1996 book, The Case for Mars is well worth reading for anyone interested in this.

Every one of the reasons given could be applied to Earth, which would use science to save human lives now.

Problem is science corporporations disagree with what we should do with Earth, and the scientists aren’t winning. Right now. It seems science is more interested in Mars than companies.
