The Duality of the Southern Thing

The "they don't care about us" has its roots in racism. We do care about you, that's why we support social welfare programs. But black people use those programs, and you're too proud/racist to use them. Because at least you're not one of them, you're better than that. You're white, after all. And dammit, shouldn't those coastal elites treat you better because of that?

It's also pretty rich given the stain of treason they bear. All being fair, today the south would be a territory and Guam et cetera would be states.

Or like Puerto Rico?

Specifically PR. Like how the American government has treated PR.

“I will try not to overlook the cruelties that victims inflict on one another as they are jammed together in the boxcars of the system. I don’t want to romanticize them. But I do remember (in rough paraphrase) a statement I once read: “The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you don’t listen to it, you will never know what justice is.”

The line about southern poverty is from the main link. I wonder what the author is talking about. I guess the implication is that liberals think southern poverty is funny, and they should stop that. That seems pretty bogus to me.

If you haven't seen how even amongst the PC folks it's still open season on "poor white trash" I don't know what to tell you.

I thought the knock on the South was about violent racist, religious extremists, which doesn't seem income related. Not to mention the only people I've ever heard talking about poor white trash is southerners talking about other southerners.

When I moved from New England to go to school in NC I was far more concerned about dealing with poor white trash than I was about racism or religious extremists. Not many of the latter two in grad school but lots of the first in places a grad student can afford to live.
