Donating $17 is a small personal commitment, but ...it can make a significant impact

quote [ Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, on fourth down and 12 yards to go, with only 53 seconds remaining, threw an improbable 49-yard touchdown pass to win the game — knocking Baltimore out of the playoffs and letting Buffalo in the back door.
Dalton immediately became a Buffalo hero, inspiring its fanatics to donate to the Cincinnati QB’s charity, which provides funding and experiences for seriously ill children and their families in Ohio and Texas.
Dalton reported that by Tuesday evening, 7,000 people had donated more than $170,000 to his foundation ]

A good news story for 2018

I think your toner cartridge is running out.

Nah - Dalton is about as pasty a ginger as you are going to find - It just looks like the toner is low because he's whiter than that jersey he has one.

I feel like I'm missing some context here. Don't sportsball teams/players/fans donate money to charities all the time? What makes this occasion particularly significant?

It's unusual because fans (if they donate at all) donate to their own team's initiative. This was a weird sort of "thank you for inadvertently sending us to the playoffs" donation, and the reason Buffalo is all crazy about this is that they hadn't made the playoffs since the last century.

Ravens and the Bills were a shoe in for the wild card. Since Buffalo won their game, the Ravens needed to win.

Ravens were leading in the final quarter with less than 2 minutes remaining. The Bengals had no business to be winning this game as they were not going to the playoffs. However, this appears to be Marvin Lewis' (coach) last game. Lewis, a former defensive coordinator to the Ravens, was not gonna sit this one down. He's out to ruin the Raven's day lol.

Bengals was already on 4th down. In their last chance to tie the game with a field goal, they managed to throw the ball for a touchdown, instead.

TL;DR - Baltimore's fuck up made the Bills clinch the playoffs.
