We brought the xkcd web comic into VR!

quote [ The Winnipeg Winter Game Jam was this past weekend, which conveniently overlapped with the itch.io xkcd Game Jam, so we chose to make something for both.

The result is xkcd vr, a virtual reality experience that lets you be all the characters from the xkcd web comic in VR using the same motion capture tech found in Flipside. ]

I wonder how much character detail it takes for you to feel a level of interaction with characters in this sort of environment? Would vague lines and familiar movements be enough to pull you in? Strange times.

I grabbed a Google Cardboard with my new Pixel because it was cheap (the cardboard, not the phone) and I've been blown away. Most 3D doesn't seem to work for me, theater movies just give me a migraine, but the headset VR is absolutely vivid and I'm fully immersed.

Have you tried a 3d movie in a theatre setting in vr yet? It works for most people that cant see normal 3d movies.

It seems to work, but I don't get much depth out of it. I can tell it's 3D, but there isn't the same feeling of actually having distance as in other VR stuff. I also still have a bit of a problem when the movie switches from distance to closeup (I can feel my eyes trying to refocus) and it felt like a relief to take the headset off so it's not perfect, but it's better than in theaters. There's also a whole bunch of settings for screen size and such in this app so toying with that may get a better result.

what? a theatre setting in vr... what do you mean?

I have never experienced Binocular depth perception... but I want to... explain yourself

There are VR players out there that will play flat 3D movies (as opposed to 180-degree stuff) as a theater screen with black, stars, or even theater seats surrounding it. So it's a 3D movie with binocular 3D rather than the polarization of a proper theater. I may give that a try tomorrow assuming I can find a movie that fits on my phone, or a player that will broadcast from my PC.

Every VR player has something frustrating about it. It's kinda fascinating, particularly since they don't all break in the same way. One may work great but not support 180/360, another is fine except there's no seep bar for skipping around in the movie. One I'm currently putting through its paces is Moon VR which has a seekbar or skips, can broadcast from the PC, but their menus are placed at some arbitrary depth in the 3D plane so if the video they're projected on has something close up or far away rather than that menu depth, your eyes (or at least my eyes) can't resolve the menu and get double-vision and headaches.
