Science and Chinese Somatization, or: Do I ‘Feel’ Like a Chinese Person?

quote [ Psychologists have long theorized that Chinese people experience their emotions more physically than other cultures. What does that say about me?

Chentsova-Dutton’s father was an astronomer. She’s found a way to use what he studied, the night sky, to understand her own research: how culture can influence the way we feel and express emotion. If you look up, there are thousands of stars, she says. You can’t possibly take them all in. So, each culture has invented schemas to remember them by, constellations. She pushes a button, and several of the depression stars are connected by a thin yellow line. ]

I haven't read through the whole thing. I'm Chinese-Canadian and it's the Canadian upbringing that has taught me to consider my physical feelings when I'm under stress. The Chinese side of me thinks that the heart/mind and body are interconnected and not separated like Descartes would say. Also, since I'm going through bouts of depression, my western trained counsellors have always told me to focus on my physical symptoms because alleviating those help the emotional state.

I feel pretty Chinese most of the time. I realize I think very differently than my Euro-Canadian colleagues but that's a welcome change, since it adds a new perspective.

I should finish this article before saying more.

Reminds me of Wendigo psychosis, and how the culture and myths of the Algonquian people seemed to influence how mental illness expressed its self.
