The FDA has approved the first digital pill

quote [ The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first digital pill for the US which tracks if patients have taken their medication. The pill called Abilify MyCite, is fitted with a tiny ingestible sensor that communicates with a patch worn by the patient — the patch then transmits medication data to a smartphone app which the patient can voluntarily upload to a database for their doctor and other authorized persons to see. Abilify is a drug that treats schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and is an add-on treatment for depression. ]

I was afraid there was gonna be a downside to giving schizophrenics a pill that snitches on them, but if FDA is on board, it must be OK.

Activated by stomach acid, so maybe stash the pill, then drop it in orange juice or coca cola?

A good idea for antipsychotic and other mental health medications, since a common problem is that people who go off of them can be resistant to going back on.

Also to show opiates disappearing on a daily schedule, instead of being sold.

I could also see it being useful for monitoring geriatric folks that aren't debilitated enough to be in a nursing home/hospital, but would benefit from additional monitoring.

There's also immediate applications to addiction programs that would be pretty exciting. I wouldn't mind having a system like this when working on smoking cessation with clients.

Is there a pill that works for kicking nicotine?
Dienes said @ 11:48pm GMT on 14th Nov
There's a few pills that help with cravings or nicotine withdrawal symptoms like Zyban, and a ton of drugs people are given off-label for smoking cessation like Wellbutrin and Clonidine.

I'd love to see if the patch can somehow be adapted for CO2 levels - that's a big pain in the ass to track remotely if you are managing a ton of smoking cessation patients.

if this pill resides within us, like some people say, then I hope it likes enchiladas, cause that's what it's getting!
