Something is wrong on the internet

quote [ As someone who grew up on the internet, I credit it as one of the most important influences on who I am today. I had a computer with internet access in my bedroom from the age of 13. It gave me access to a lot of things which were totally inappropriate for a young teenager, but it was OK. The culture, politics, and interpersonal relationships which I consider to be central to my identity were shaped by the internet, in ways that I have always considered to be beneficial to me personally. I have always been a critical proponent of the internet and everything it has brought, and broadly considered it to be emancipatory and beneficial. I state this at the outset because thinking through the implications of the problem I am going to describe troubles my own assumptions and prejudices in significant ways. ]

What it looks like at its most "innocent" interpretation is that SEO, clickbait, machine learning, and automation have formed an unholy alliance leading to some really disturbing shit flooding youtube and exposing children to things they shouldn't be seeing.

A much darker interpretation is that there's a group of people out there purposely fucking with the emotional and mental stability of future generations. Beyond just Silicon Valley.

How fast did a learning Twitter bot turn into a Nazi again?

We don't need a deep conspiracy to explain this. We have loud, shitty people screwing things up for the rest of us. Since when is that new?

It sounds like the problem here is that children are boring and parents are turning to apps to handle the tedious chore of interacting with them. The obvious technological solution would be to replace children with apps that are interesting enough to be worth spending time with.

A lot of people have already done that.

Most dirty web content originally came out of 4chan. Now that they have been neutered and Moot long gone, all that comes out from there now is furry bullshit.
SA sits in the background with some of it's users posting out crap. But it's all too small to give a shit about. Now you have a new generation trying to get into the Deep Web when all they are really doing is scraping the top levels off the Undernet.

I was in grade 3 when I got my first computer. A PET. Yeah, I'm old. Trolls are going to troll, the interbutts is just going to keep growing. Parents need to watch what their kids are looking at online.

"Most dirty web content originally came out of 4chan"
Thats ridiculously naive... you could find the sickest (original meaning) shit on TheHun / Ogreish, etc, years before 4chan existed.

4chan was just where it was shared, but places like the stileproject was where you had a curator collect and post that kind of stuff.

Correct.
blaming 4chan, or rather crediting 4chan as where "Most dirty web content originally came out of", though, is i still naive.

It would be like saying "Facebook is originally where online stalking came from"

Machine learning is great. The source material isn’t.

Its easier to say that trolls are ruining machine learning apps from Microsoft or Google. Evil intentions are always there. Every generation before us have referred the next as degenerates or the downfall of society. Now amply that collective train of thought globally with the Internet.

You guys are way behind the curve on this 'Elsagate' stuff.

For sure. I'd run across a video or two, but didn't know this was all a thing. The algorithms keep most of it out of my sight.

Wow, I had no idea what a phenomenon it is. My daughter used to be allowed to watch a YouTube video while brushing her teeth and this bizarre peppa pig crap would come up all the time. I just figured it was us getting unlucky with the tubes.

Stupid reddit.

Yeah, I don‘t think children need unsupervised access to the internet. There are some real weirdos out there...
