Netflix to cancel House of Cards in wake of Kevin Spacey allegations

quote [ Netflix has announced it was cancelling its flagship television series, House of Cards, a day after allegations that its star, Kevin Spacey, sexually harassed a 14-year-old boy. ]

Another hollywood open secret getting attention. This guy has given me the creeps ever since Epstein got caught and he was named as one of his airplane buddies.

Is anyone bothered by peoples careers ruined from allegations in the court of public opinion? I am all for convicting criminals, but Spacey getting drunk and hitting on someone at a party? I just don't know if he deserves having his life ruined.

I'm pretty sure carrying a 14-year-old into your bedroom and laying on top of them is more than just "hitting" on people. There are plenty of drunk people who don't get inappropriate with 14 year olds. You're either into underaged people or not. Being drunk doesn't excuse it.

This is probably not the only time Spacey has been a creep. The only difference is one of them came forward.

A genuine apology would have been better than making it about him. And coming out as gay in the same apology? Why would you do that? Why hide behind a coming out story? That just makes it worse and wrongfully equates gayness with pedophilic tendencies.

In hindsight, his apology made it worse.

Also, this is a package deal of being a famous person. Your career literally is dependent on public opinion.

In comparison, there are lots of women accusing Cosby. He's been vilified as such, but he's not completely banned from the industry. Weinstein has over 80 women coming forward with their experience. Banned.

What's the difference? Most of the 80+ women are famous people.

I read the kid was already accustomed to the flamboyant broadway actor lifestyle. Was on broadway since he was 9 years old. This happened when he was 14. He went to a party, got bored and sat on the edge of Spacey's bed watching tv. He went there voluntarily, spacey didn't take him there. Until the end of the evening when everybody left and Spacey showed up. He put him on the bed and laid on top. Kid squirmed, got up and left. Maybe spacey thought the kid wanted to have sex. Waited until everybody left and sat on his bed. A very drunk person could misconstrue that.

You've also made assumptions that he's done this before. You'd think in the wake of the Harvey shit kids would be coming out of the woodwork in the first 24 hours. If the do, then he's a predator, no argument from me. If not, then is he still a predator who's career is/ should be effectively over? There was no sexual contact.

I'm not excusing what he did nor condoning it. I've been very drunk and hit on women. Never used my physical superiority to force it, though. It was wrong, but I know and have been in and around social circles where homosexual men are outwardly flamboyant and practically have sex right in front of you. Bragging about how their first sex encounter was 12 or 14. With older men.

So it has been tried in the court of public opinion with so many facts missing, but I have to agree his deflection by coming out as gay was horrible and made everything worse. I understand your career as an actor is dependent on public opinion, but there are slander laws, etc. I'm also sure Anthony Rapp knew he would bring Spacey down and ruin his career in light of sexual harassment and rape in the public eye. Almost sounds vindictive.

Just want to add that a lot (maybe all) of people's favorite famous people are problematic and have dark secrets they try to keep away from the public.

I know of a friend of a friend who is an industry writer who was groped by Jimmy Fallon at a party. He just looked at her and then left like it was no big deal.

Can you imagine someone who did you wrong getting really famous over the years and everyone just talks about them in adoration? That's probably how Anthony Rapp feels whenever he comes across Spacey.

I'd heard stories about him from fellow actors for years. Heck, I thought he'd already come out ages ago because we all knew. There were plenty of tales about his preferred type - younger men - though of legal age. A friend who was AD on a London show he was in said he was always first to the pub after the show and then surrounded by lovely young guys. She also found him rather unpleasant to deal with. So the surprise to me is that he went after someone under age, not that he is gay or likes 'em younger. God knows what else we'll hear...

Wasn't this to be the last season of the show anyway?

They will probably continue to show the episodes that are in the can.

The headline has the wan implication that the end of the series is related to the allegations. There is indication that season 6 was already scheduled to be the last (autoplay warning).
Production on House of Cards‘ sixth and final season began earlier this month despite the fact that Netflix never officially confirmed that it had even ordered a Season 6.

There seems to be impropriety and not actual crime alleged, so there being no law against being a jackass, production is likely to continue.

House of cards indeed.

‘Cancels’ is misleading. Unless they’ve update what they wanted, I thought it was ending after season 6, which was supposed to be the last season anyway.

Yes, but swirling up distaste in light of current events is beneficial. It means netflix wants no part of alleged sexual assault and prefers to announce it to the world on a soapbox as loudly as is effective.
