I mostly use IRC to trade ebooks, but I'm glad it's still there. I have never, and most likely never will, use Slack.

I use both. These is a lot more complication with IRC that scares people. Slack is easy, that is why more people use it.
Edit for clarity; there are a million irc clients and servers, there are a million options and settings that are great if you need them but are intimidating for someone coming from aim or whatever. |

I haunted one of the IRC channels for a while. Some good chats (and bad) with sobriquet and fforw back in the early 2000s. Kinda hard to believe it was so long ago.
