quote [ Rabbani said in a statement after the verdict that the judgment highlighted the “absurdity of the Schedule 7 law” and called for it to be reformed. “If privacy and confidentiality are crimes, then the law stands condemned,” he said. “They accept that at no point was I under suspicion, and that ultimately this was a matter of having been profiled at a port. ]

It's been 1984 in Britain for a long time. Terrorism laws trump traditional notions of justice. You can be held without habeas corpus under their terrorism laws.

The Cato Institute's Human Freedom Index ranks the US and UK quite closely overall, with slightly different freedoms in both countries. It ranks the UK slightly better on 'Rule of Law' and 'Safety and Security'. The US is slightly better for 'Laws and regulations that influence media content' and worse for ''freedom of foreign movement". I'm not sure what that is. Are you still not allowed to visit Cuba?
Both countries are way better than most countries of the world, but definitely not at the top. Having said all that, I don't know if absolute freedom is something we should aspire to. We would have total freedom in a Mad Max wasteland, whereas the nature of civilisation imposes restrictions on freedom. |

US terrorism laws suspended habeas corpus under Bush and Obama. I can't imagine it's been brought back under Trump.

I think that was only for foreign nationals but I am not sure. I mean that is bad enough but not for US citizens. That was the basis of Gimo imprisonment if I'm right.
