quote [ MacKaye’s brother Alec was a member of Dischord band Faith—one of Kurt Cobain’s admitted influences—and of Ignition with Gray Matter’s Dante Ferrando, who went on, with investments from Dave Grohl, to found the club Black Cat, a central hub of punk and indie rock in DC for 27 years. The more you dig into the musical families of Dischord, the more you see how embedded they are not only in their home city, but in the weft of modern American rock. ]
I didn't realize DC was so influential in the punk scene. Looks like you need an account on the Dischord site to listen, but it's free and they have over 75 bands and several hundred albums. Link to the band list in extended.

If you're interested in the history of 80s American punk/alternative music, I strongly recommend Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991.
