Science establishment-prompted bullshit headline. The intent is to garner sympathy for "scientific freedom" or some other crackpot rationalization for "give me public money and let me do whatever the fuck I want in the lab, including personal profit from your tax dollars".
Sure, the George Church's of the world are probably pissed at him, and a little envious at all the attention he's getting, but they nevertheless will underhandedly (or sometimes even overtly) defend him not out of sympathy but out of self-interest.
Such are the ethics of this class of biotech doods trying to push the edge. I know some of them personally and I so attest.
