It's because the crimes he was charged with are more serious and carry heavier sentences.
Which is frankly retarded.
Point blank, if law is enacted to make killing Cops a hate crime, then I want to see equal laws enacted for the opposite side. Lets impose longer sentencing and on cops who get caught breaking the law.
